Justified in a logical sense. I said in the next sentence it’s not exactly a moral path, but from a purely strategic outlook it’s rather justified because the Bearer has the power to destroy them all. So you take the absolute maximum amount of precautions to stop that from happening.
I agree, it would have been better for them to treat the Bearer with respect; I mentioned this myself thousands of posts back. It would probably have been smarter, since the Bearer is less likely to oppose them that way. But from a strategic perspective, taking that route would have hinged on chance far more than they would be comfortable with. What if the Bearer didn’t like them anyway?
It was either take a chance on the Bearer trusting them and have minimum back-ups if they didn’t, or carefully plan every possible contingency at the expense of the Bearers affection and trust. Throw the desperation they must have been feeling into the mix, and it’s clear they approached it in a methodical manner when it probably should have been emotional.
True but then they really cannot fault our mc’s for making logical (and partly emotional) calculations about them too and like I said the only one who comes out of that just slightly in the black for my mc at least (particularly in the rewritten version where she will apparently let us choose our own apparel) is “auntie”.
Of course they can’t fault the MC for that if they do so. But through the path they have chosen for the Bearer, it’s likely that they have a plan for dealing with such decisions, whereas in the alternate path, they wouldn’t have. Or at the least would have had substantially less effective plans.
I get what you are saying, I do, but that´s my point. The “methodical” aproach they took was…stupid, to say the least. Why not just raise you there, in Olympus, treating you as a child or as a tool or as both. At least you would´ve grown accustomed to it, for better or worse. They could´ve raised you as the Champion of the Gods, raised as the Hero of an ancient prophecy borned to save them. They could´ve brainwashed you from the get go. They didn´t. So what does that say about their so call wisdom? Shit, maybe they want to die.
Well, to be fair, part of this is mostly Athena’s fault as she kidnapped the MC and by that pretty much stopped the other gods from raising MC on Olympus, even if they inteded to do just that.
I’m actually not certain that they DIDN’T want to do that. If you recall, Athena stole us away as a baby because she wanted us to live a normal life. The only other being that knew about it was Hades.
The approach they have taken isn’t the best in terms of emotion, but they’re desperate. They don’t think of how they could appeal to the Bearers emotions, because they’re Gods. They’re used to having all the power; the Gods appealing to the emotions of a young teenager? That would be such a blow to their pride it would be like washing their robes and tunics in grease and slime and being forced to parade about in them.
They took the most calculated steps they could so they could retain the power they’ve had for eternity. Only they don’t fully realise that they no longer are the most powerful beings in the universe. They do know, but at the same time they don’t.
It’s calculated desperation, so much so that they can’t see a better option even when it’s staring them in the face.
Oh, did she? Did she really? They claim she did but c´mon. It would be stupid to believe one Goddes could steal Olympus´ most precious posetion (despite of who pulled it off). Maybe it´s a ruse. Maybe they asked themselves “Why would the Bearer trust us?” and Athena, smart as always, would´ve said “Let´make it trust us.” And boom. You fake a kidnap, you fake to give a shit and you fake to be punish for your so called “kidnap” and then you are almost bound to trust her once the cat is out of the bag…Granted, this is just my conspiratory self talking, it´s a highly volatile plan but…Not an unrealistic one.
That sounds stupidly risky with not much gain tbh… And it contradicts many of the things that just happened to MC, or at least would need much more explanations to make it plausible…
…
It really just sounds like a very stupid plan. At least when looking at it from the other gods perspective, for Athena it indeed could lead to some benefits…or maybe it’s part of her hidden agenda.
Your MC seems to be driven primarily by logic, I certainly never claimed any such thing about mine.
To be perfectly honest, my MC would probably not make a better god than the Olympians. She might use their overall arrogance and disregard for human life as arguments for why anyone should hate them, but the truth is she takes after her father way more than she’d ever admit. She is selfish and arrogant and hates the gods for the pain they have caused to her specifically. She was living a good life until the day the gods kidnapped her parent and started sending bounty hunters after her, forcing her to leave her whole life behind, and the years on the run gave her plenty of time to grow and focus her hatred. I’m honestly surprised she only killed one seeker in all that time.
I suppose she’s actually perfect to be the gods’ champion, considering how much she embodies their values: Arrogance, spitefulness, vindictiveness, disregard for anyone but themselves…
This is what they seem to have done with our “brother” Aeson and while they’ve apparently caused him more than his fair share of pain, grief and trouble too, at least he had a lavish home he could return to at the end of the day, got plenty of nice gifts and an “elite” education and had family who (pretended to) love him.
While the mc had virtually none of that, not for the last three years and everything before that was one big, giant sham in which we couldn’t even be trusted to know our true identity, even if it wasn’t an unpleasant sham. Still we were even then not living quite as lavishly as Aeson and the worst part is that we still don’t even when we’re on Olympus too we get hardly any luxury, barebones quarters with a very annoying roommate.
So, yes, my mc is a bit jealous of Aeson, even if he intellectually does know that he didn’t ask to be the favourite.
If that is Athena’s plan to make us trust the Gods then she’s far dumber than her namesake leads us to believe. I agree with @Sammysam, a plan even remotely resembling that would be high risk/low reward at best.
And she’s not one lone Goddess; she had the help of Hades, quite possibly the most powerful God out of them all in terms of sheer capability. There’s also the fact that Athena is the Goddess of Wisdom; nobody can match her for intellect. That’s a key deciding factor.
Keep in mind the Gods have never done anything like this before. Sure, there have been Bearers and Bestowers, but the Gods have never involved them so heavily in their lives, never been so involved in their lives, and never given them this amount of power before. So it’s not unreasonable that Athena only now truly had a problem with how the Gods planned to treat Lavei.
Plus, Athena can probably never have natural children of her own; previous events have rendered her incapable of romantic love. Which deprives her of the chance of motherhood. It’s a long shot, I know, but is it truly unfeasible that Athena may have seen a Lavei who is almost certainly going to be mistreated her entire life as one of her only, perhaps THE only chance to be a parental figure of sorts? Maternal love certainly isn’t off the cards along with romantic love.
She fills the role of ‘Auntie’ as long as she possibly can before she’s finally found out. Instincts like that must be extremely powerful, even for the Gods. Athena is one of the less calculating Gods in the collective, less scheming. Of course she calculates and schemes in the strictest sense of the words; she’s the Goddess of Wisdom. But out of them all, she’s one of the least likely to do it in a manipulative manner.
My MC chooses to trust Athena for this reason. Of course, she wouldn’t fully trust Athena for a while…but for the entirety of her life, Athena cared for her while hiding from the Gods. Even if Athena does have an ulterior motive in place, that doesn’t happen without a bond with some level of trust and protection developing between them.
I think my mc largely agrees with that sentiment, especially because he chooses to believe her imprisonment story which would make her the only God to have suffered on his behalf.
The other part is that if he didn’t he’d truly be alone on Olympus and he doesn’t want that either so she’s also his only option for companionship because he wants neither the scooby gang nor the rest of the gods in his life and of course he truly, loathes, hates and despises his “dad”.
Oh I totally agree. It’s bonkers. It is a highly volatile plan that’s not worth trying. But, like I said, it is somewhat plausible so I don’t disregard it altogether…It’s just at the bottom of my How-The-Gods-Might-Be-Fucking-With-Me list.
Rude as hell stalker and sarcastic. He treated my character as shit and later like she were his servant he could command and summon . Also he is just clumsy and stubborn.
Saint is the author’s pet … he is her favorite and gets all the special treatments. I resent author pets… they get special plot armor and other preferential treatments
Wow, that’s not the impression I got; more like the complete opposite for me! From how I read his lines and our description, I pegged him as a happy-go-lucky, spastic, impulsive, joking and just the opposite of a Debby Downer. Unless there’s a line that explicitly states he’s controlling or something, I don’t see him as bad guy.
