It’s not that people ignore it I think, it’s that her skin colour is only mentioned sparsely along with the fact that Caucasian people are much more likely to have blonde hair than people with darker skin. At a certain point your brain just automatically takes over and fills in the blanks closest to what you attribute to the norm. It’s an established thing, but I agree; doesn’t mean it isn’t still irritating.
I guess I don’t understand the controversy - Calypso is an individual character and we are all able to fill in our own Calypso building images … I have more trouble with the myths and mythology of OTL not matching with what @Rohie writes. Which is not to say her writing needs any changes… only that I have trouble wrapping my mind around the story-world due to classical mythical interference.
Just for clarification… How does one go about getting a father other then Poseidon? I’ve gotten him every time…
Post 3449. That’ll tell you how.
I believe the reason is because the Roman Empire was the one that took over most of Europe and shaped most of the modern-day countries. For example, we call French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese “Romantic” languages since they’re based on and derived from Roman Latin. I believe it’s understandable that those cultures would pay tribute to their “mother” (fun fact: French and Spanish’s names for the days of the week are also named after the Roman gods. Perhaps Portugues and Italian’s as well but I don’t know those languages so I can’t say for sure). At least Athena still gets more attention than Minerva?
And yeah, DC was packed and humid and it started pouring while we were at the Lincoln Memorial, miles away from any metro stops. I also just realized how popular Greek columns are in DC. More than the image of the gods, the Greek-style architecture of columns and marble is everywhere
I am not sure how races are considered in English, so I hope not offend anyone. (Please if you feel offended for any word I use please tell me to use what I should). Melanesian, Australian native people etc… For us are not “Black” or" African" so @Rohie Is she Melanesian or African American? Because I was imaging this
Ironically, the style in DC and most American cities is Roman variants of Greek building… including the Memorial.
Edit: @poison_mara - that fits my mental imagry as well.
She is really pretty girl she certainly could be a good warrior and had something like strong and powerful same time as girly. So that’s my own Calypso.
Yes… although I dislike tattoos, @Rohie wrote her having them… so that is the only part my mental image trips up with the gospel. btw… the pink lipstick needs to go
Lol, oops. Why can’t they make it simple and just make obelisks for everyone?
@poison_mara African Americans are people from the United States who are of African descent. While the term may be used to erroneously encompass all people of dark complexion, an American of Melanesian descent shouldn’t be called “African American” since Papua New Guinea is on the opposite side of the world from Africa.
As for Calypso’s ethnicity, I believe she IS from Africa and grew up in the US, which makes her an African immigrant or African-American. I can’t remember which country she’s from specifically since I didn’t pay much attention to our dance. i was too busy min-maxing my stats based on those yummy snacks…
Edit: Caly’s from Eritrea, which is in eastern Africa >_<
I know but in text says Melanesian but Rohie last post says African American… So I am confused. Mixture ethics like Africans and Melanesian because the people have dark color of skin It is ridiculous to me. Melanesian and African natives are not same culture…
EDIT Eritrea so the nacionality changed in the update? But the weird blonde blue eyes are a genome difference in Melanesian not so much in Africa
I’m sorry, but where did it say Melanesian again? I dimly remember reading that but that was a while ago. I’m looking at the dance with Calypso right now and she says:
“Every weekend I send messages. It’s just my mother and my two little brothers; Ariam and Aram. They’re still in Eritrea…”
Which means she’s definitely from Africa
The blonde hair and blue eyes could be from Ares? I still don’t know how divine genetics work…
No it is a real stuff a good percentage of Melanesian people born with blue eyes and blond hair is a variety in a genome only in that area. I just read an article five minutes ago.
I have no idea where people are getting that Calypso is Melanesian from. Did I miss a part or are people just making stuff up?
Until last update text said Melanesian
I’m not disputing that. I’m suggesting that Calypso’s own blonde hair could be because of her demigod heritage and not her African descent
@Ninja I got ninja’d by @poison_mara. How fitting >_<. I think Calypso’s stated physical traits also resemble Melanesian people more than African people.
Maybe she’ll get retconned and her blonde hair will be changed to black for simplicity’s sake in the future? >_<
Okay that makes sense. Melanesians aren’t Black so I understand where the confusion is coming from. I thought Calypso was just supposed to be an extra tan White person.
Exactly, the article said that African had more albinism and Melanesian the weird coloration in hair and eyes blue silver and green. It was recently when the exactly genetic cause was discovered.
Edit Also tattoos as described are more traditional in Melanesian warrior cultures not so much in Africa. Where people uses more paint qnd jewelry and piercings
Calypso could have gotten her tattoos in the US? And I’m pretty sure Eritrea also have their own tattoo parlors? Those would be more permanent than paint, after all.
That is not true. Tattoos, or tribal marking, has always been a big part of many African cultures.
