In Vesper’s case, he uses it because he barely knows her. You can tell which way he’s using a nickname by the tone he’s saying it. Try to imagine yourself in her shoes for a moment. On better days, when her depression isn’t too severe, how does she take in the world around her? During times when she’s at her lowest, what exactly effects the way she sees things around her and how does if cause her to take things in (or reject them) during these times? What eases her depression to some extent and causes her to open a bit and what end up making it worse and causes her to withdraw into herself? Just a few questions to think about in this regards (at least, the ones that currently cross my mind). I personally think imagining the way the Bearers absorb the world around them is a good stepping stone to discovering the way their mind works. ---

Those are really great questions to think about, actually! I like pineapple pizza too, but in my experience a majority of people seem to think that it’s… Weird? What i’m trying to say that people can easily judge someone based on their interests, so that’s why a simple thing as a slice of pineapple pizza can make people less interested in knowing you. ---
