Birth of a Hero (WIP, Update 16th March, new villain to fight)

super-powers

#101

Almost finished with Highway Wars, and Nanowrimo starts this month, so I’m hoping to start to now make some quick progress on this game. However, before adding any new content I’ll be mostly trying to finish addressing all the points below (as otherwise I might be carrying bugs and problems to the new parts of the game)

Replies
@Natman1025 -Already, there are difficulty levels in the game. I feel that normally people who complete the game in a given difficulty might be trying to then solve it in a higher difficulty, and not the other way around?
@IronRaptor telekinesis at the moment can be used to slow down your opponents. Let me know if there are other uses you want for it?

Changes
-Fixed bug with port official referring to MC as male (@tooweiss
-Telekinesis has now been tweaked. There are two levels, weak (only telekinetic blasts) and normal telekinetic (can also slow down enemies). Port official can now be intimidated with telekinesis. Any other places where it should be used? (@IronRaptor)
-Added no slip power to water powers. There is now one additional moment in the port where it can be used to prevent some damage (together with flying or regeneration)
-Added possibility to chase or teleport out of bank in first encounter with Steel Aeronaut (if MC can teleport of fly)
-Added possibility of using gravity powers in masquerade on woman

Outstanding issues
-Re-write some of the dialogues for co-workers, to add flavour (a frequent complaint, so I need to work on this!)
-Add some dialogue from co-workers wondering why MC is so badly hurt.
-Look at possibility of influencing boss with mind powers
-Change the description of why the MC is being shouted at (if high charisma/intelligence they should refer to frequent absence, little work done, etc)
-Suggestion for powers: ability to mess around with Richard as payback (splash the coffee in his face or if you control fire you can boil his coffee to burn him, if you have appropriate power).
-Place all powers chosen in the power choosing page
-Add extra time manipulation powers
-Water powers are underpowered. Add “unaffected by slippery surfaces” (maybe MC can slip and lose some hp in some section). Manipulate acid (“acid blast”?). Freezing floor (stun), Acid (painful stun?)
-Suggestions for powers from @Chaosteress (Message #45)
-Possibly add personal time manipulation (speed up, slow down MC)
-Add option to clear powers and choose again
-Check extra power suggestions in post #100
-Rework some situations (showing, not telling, post #78) “For example, you said that not everyone is willing to accept powered individuals and simply want to experiment on them. Rather than telling the player that, show them. Have the reader encounter a group of people who are vocal about their distaste for superheroes. As the MC walk through an electronic store, have a segment show up on a TV on how scientists believe that these powered people should be “examined” to further understand them, sugarfrosting their speech to hide their shady intentions.”

I tried picking time powers, but the game bugged out

#103

Are there any benefits from buying an expensive apartment?

#104

My take on telekinesis is the “control of objects around me.” Slows or status inducing effects have never excited me (blame the Final Fantasy series.)

In the name of simplicity, I would use it as a weak offensive/defensive power. You could have the opportunity to fling objects at you opponent as ranged projectiles, or you can cause items to be impromptu shields.

First major update. On your first free Friday you now have 2 options of what to do (patrol streets and go and investigate about Mr. Watson). More options will be added next week (working on them now)…

Answers
@War_Doctor, can you explain more about the problem? The game doesn’t show any errors when I run it…
@BigSmoke, not really, this is purely cosmetic…
@IronRaptor, telekinesis can now be used as a “telekinetic blast”, plus there is the option in one section of placing a box on top of someone.

This does bring up the concept of money: What will it be used for? Why are our engineering characters not going to the local electronics stores to make mechanical augmentations of their own?

Also, random question: Are speedsters going to be a possibility? Otherwise, what are agility characters good for?

#107

I do have a vague intention of allowing the use of weapons or mechanical enhancements (another list of superhero powers, related to being able to invent things, like an Iron Man armour, etc). This should open up the possibility of paying for things, etc. Already there is one or two opportunities in there to use money, but any recommendations are welcome (thinking about this now I just added the opportunity to bribe the port official, but any other ideas are welcome!)

Agility determines the amount of damage inflicted by ranged weapons, and also allows you to partially dodge attacks (if your agility is greater than the opponents marksmanship of melee combat). There are a few other tests for agility already coded into the game, and there should be some more eventually… So far speedsters haven’t bee coded. I’d like to implement them…

@adrao

Has the costume bug been fixed?

#109

Should be fixed! I also ran bugcheckers and everything should we ok now

#110

Costume choices work.

Summary

First option…

#111

The blade and gun should be free bes considering they are more equipment than powers. You could off set it by making the gun and blade take out a chunk of your first pay check. Other than this, I love this text.

#112

Yo this game is really cool and is already one of my favorites because of the ability to manipulate time but also shouldn’t manipulating be allowed to do more than just go back in time and instead be able to freeze time or slow it down when fighting enemies almost all of the fight parts could include it

#113

Option of sidekicks?

#114

If sidekicks were to be in the game they should have an opposing power to the MC’s say if you had mental abilities the sidekick would focus on physical abilities such as super strength and super speed etc.

#115

The amount of power choices that you get is amazing. It definitely is nice you have a variety of options for what general and then specific powers you get because in a lot of these games you are trapped to one power set. With the first few encounters with my boss or the Steel Astronaut it didn’t feel like anything I did mattered. I could have the best stats for my job and still my boss would hate me. Even if I just kept focusing on work she wouldn’t like me, hopefully that will change later on but still it just feels like you are trapped.

#116

I found this, i was an pyroman. Sure as hell not telepath.
Chose every power exsept fire blade. And when i pressed at the option it gave me something about urine smell. But everything went good?

#117

When you meet the black market dealer and use your telepathic powers on her, it says that an image of steel aeronaut ( as a civilian) pops up. Yet at the party it’s seems like the player’s character is not aware of who she is till she discloses herself.

1st page- use only ‘the sound of sirens’ as the reader can infer that they’re police sirens and shorter sentences make scenes seem more fast paced. I’d delete with in “with some of them recognising you on approach” and maybe combine that sentence and the one after it. Instead of ‘inside a building that was on fire’ use from a burning building. ~ maybe include more options for careers like student or scientist. For the broadcast you can just reword what an actual newscaster said about a robber standoff. Also an option to have a militaristic costume would be nice~

Be careful of choice overload, I think you should give upgrades in small chunks like early on give the character a short range and long range attack and let them decide what it looks like [ex: sword] but don’t give to access to stronger abilities. Instead scale up and maybe have the upgrades depend on your choices. Got into a physical brawl? Now you can choose which physical attribute gets a 10 point boost. I like being able to choose a miscellaneous power, the clothing, type of power, but I’d rather have less choices when it comes to starting attacks/defense and have access to stronger ones later on.

  • youre giving too many choices early one before we had a chance to use our skills/power in action. Hold off on it a bit. Maybe also make it more clear what the professional skills do like if I choose to learn about medicine will that be enough or do I need a certain level. I think it makes more sense to have it be limited to 3 choices like medicine, hunting, martial arts and then another 3 choices later on tech, rhetoric, journalism and put in parenthesis what each choice will do ex. journalism (you learns about crime reports faster and have extra information on superpowered individuals) since you don’t really use any of the abilities just yet.

*** fight scenes should be longer

#119

Real life was busy during the past two weeks, so I didn’t manage to get much time to work on this, but hopefully things should speed up in the next week.

Answers
@Hello_to_you, if I implement “inventor” type powers this may change, but at the moment the gun and blades basically are allowing you to enhance the damage to these weapons.
@BigSmoke @Chaosteress, sidekicks will be implemented, and they will play a role in the story. Essentially, they will develop though these side missions that I slowly want to implement…
@TheSarah thanks for the suggestions, I will implement most of them (added to the “to do” list below, though it is going to take me some time. The only part I probably wont is choosing the powers, as I want to make clear to the player that there is a wide choice, and re-coding this part would be a nightmare at this point…

Changes
-Bug when using telekinesis to move box fixed
-Changed slightly the description of the woman that you get from the black market dealer if you use telepathy (@BigSmoke) .

Outstanding issues
-Add possibility militaristic costume
-More choices of professions (student, scientist?)
-Make fight scenes longer?
-Include explanation of what the abilities do (" Maybe also make it more clear what the professional skills do like if I choose to learn about medicine will that be enough or do I need a certain level. I think it makes more sense to have it be limited to 3 choices like medicine, hunting, martial arts and then another 3 choices later on tech, rhetoric, journalism and put in parenthesis what each choice will do ex. journalism (you learns about crime reports faster and have extra information on superpowered individuals) since you don’t really use any of the abilities just yet.")

-Add some dialogue from co-workers wondering why MC is so badly hurt.
-Look at possibility of influencing boss with mind powers
-Change the description of why the MC is being shouted at (if high charisma/intelligence they should refer to frequent absence, little work done, etc). MC feels as if nothing they do matters (so there should be some room for that)
-Suggestion for powers: ability to mess around with Richard as payback (splash the coffee in his face or if you control fire you can boil his coffee to burn him, if you have appropriate power).
-Place all powers chosen in the power choosing page
-Add extra time manipulation powers (personal time manipulation (speed up, slow down MC))
-Add speedsters (many people requested this)
-Add mechanical armours?
-Water powers are underpowered. Manipulate acid (“acid blast”?). Freezing floor (stun), Acid (painful stun?)
-Suggestions for powers from @Chaosteress (Message #45)
-Add option to clear powers and choose again
-Check extra power suggestions in post #100

-R#2, add a bit more to the world building, a little bit more detail and colour.
-Ask more clearly the player to define his orientation?
-Possibility to eventually romance the boss? Having a base? working for a government organisation? become a villain?

#120

Tried playing a little, and have some minor suggestions (hope I didn’t miss them in the other posts):

Maybe separate hair color and style to allow for a better selection (including bald)?
There’s no option not to have piercings and tattoos or just either, only both.
Kinda missing the ability to create minor illusions as defense for light and shadowpowers
Maybe add a note on ‘infusing projectiles’ that this will lead to pick an additional weapon? I first though bolts of darkness and infused projectiles would mean the same.
Give an option to go back if one is unhappy with how the power specifications are and let them redo it?
