April 2025 Writer Support Thread

It would be pretty hard to seduce the government or a post apocalyptic environment. Unless you like a challenge…

I ended up taking a writing break over the weekend without trying to hit minimum goals and today it’s very hard to get back to it. I had a feeling it’d happen since I fall out of habits super quick if I’m not careful. It’s also just been a hectic day; the bread did not rise, the beans burned, some quail hatched, and I really just want to sit down and be like “ok, serious writing time”.

It’s only 7pm, though, so there’s time yet. Maybe. :joy:

I genuinely tend to put at least a little of myself into my antagonists, I usually end up at least empathizing with them at least a bit. It’s very rare that I write a character I find truly repellent (and usually, when I do that, I put them on the MC’s side).

I hate it when every government is evil, that’s why I have city-states. :face_with_tongue: Even if they can literally eat each other.

I don’t need to find them repellent, but I do need to find them something I don’t mind losing, otherwise what’s the point? I have this one super antagonist who ended up a very reluctant protagonist, because I ended up making him too reasonable and liking that narrative way more.

I think losing is part of the story, and an important one at that. Making the player lose someone or something genuinely admirable can raise stakes, hammer home the seriousness of the situation, and do a lot to elevate the story. Obviously you can’t just kill everyone the moment they show the barest scent of cinnamon roll, but using that loss strategically can really give your story emotional teeth.

Thanks for that :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oooohohoho, I love putting MCs through the wringer. What I mean is, when I have a character whose main goal is “you already killed me, now leave me alone”, how can I fault them for that? They don’t work as a primary antagonist anymore, at least not in the way I originally wrote them in. Without making the protagonists total jerks at least. So I get another primary antagonist and keep them as a secondary/wildcard one.

This all happening in the planning stage, mind, so it’s easy to switch.

Its not like losing america was the English plan. But damn, they realy, really needed their taxes didn’t?

Ok time to sing Hammilton! Again!

Sometimes habits can be a creativity killer. Its better the beans than thou almright?

No, I do mean evil. I’m writing post-(post)-apocalyptic cyberpunk sci-fi (with superheroes).

Sometimes! I try to write at least 500 words a day, even if it’s just outline work, because without the routine I will go off rails and just never write again for a year or something. I’m not huge on having a strict schedule but (good) habits are nice to have when you live in a state of constant flexibility/chaos.

And I’m still sad about the beans, but yes, better them than me. I’m too cute for that.

Well, it’s the 15th of the month. For those new here, we invite everyone to share a bit of their writing here, not to be critiqued, but to be shared. This can be to show off or hint at things you’re working on, or to help pull some out of the shell of being nervous of sharing.

I’ll start.

Dawn of Heroes Chapter 16 Aegis Rewrite Spoilers

The embarrassment in Binita’s expressions is adorable. Her back straightens and she adjusts to continue walking down the sidewalk as if her friends are not there. The group laughs as introductions are passed around.

“I’m Brad,” the guy says with a wave before pointing at the brunette in his arms. “This is my wife, Brigget.”

“I’m Yolanda, but my friends call me Lonnie,” the tanned woman says. “As you’ve already been hit on by Ceara here.”

Ceara gives me a defeated wave as the group continues down the street. Binita’s friends had started bar hopping about an hour ago, and some of them were already feeling tipsy. We continue walking until we reach The Good Companions, a bar made to look like a British pub.

The number of other patrons fills a little over half of the relatively small space. It looks newly furnished with well-done woodworking and plenty of pictures framing the walls, filling in the otherwise black walls.

Binita and her four friends quickly find a table and sit.

“I think ya’ll should get something in ya other than alcohol,” Brad suggests.

“Yeah, something to soak it up will help us go longer,” Binita says casually.

“You know, I’m surprised you’re not as tispy as Ceara,” Lonnie teases. “Normally, you and Ceara would be singing by now. However, you seem unaffected tonight.”

“Have you been building a tolerance without me?” Ceara says as she leans against Binita’s shoulder. “What betrayal.”

I lean in. “Binita sings?”

“Poorly,” Brigget chimes.

The group laughs as Binita shakes her head and covers her face with a menu.

“Only when she’s had some wine or beer,” Lonnie continues to tease. “There is a different side to her that is a few glasses away. You would be surprised by the person she hides from everyone.”

“You think so?” I smile. “I was thinking the same thing.”

As I don’t want to spoil things, here’s a snippet I’ve written around a week ago. The second snippet contains a reference to Diablo III.

Lily Adventuresses! Episode 2 Chapter 4: Optional event in Didal Theater, Sinoloan

Brionna:
Oh! A show’s going on!
Let’s all go watch!

Halina:
Sure, why not?

What we are all watching is a slice-of-life, “cute girls doing cute things” play titled “Usagi and the Village”.
That is, until the plot twist in the final act goes like this.
“When your job is to maintain a ‘Potemkin village’, and the top boss who pays you salary is about to get screwed now that his chief justice won’t be there to cover his butt, you’ll probably be scared for your life.”
Thankfully, in the usual way, the play’s conflict is swiftly resolved, and the ending is the right kind of sweet.

Brionna:
Wow, that was great!
That’s why I love the performing arts!

Halina:
Oh yes, I recall you saying one time that because you admire those actresses who give their all, you call Esinlorb home.
And… you’re originally from Archytus, the homeland of the elves.

Brionna:
Yeah.
You’re like… my third mom.
I don’t know what my first mom even looked like, and my second… (sob)

Halina:
There, there.
As your leader, and as your proverbial mother, I’m always here for you all.

Jopay and Shiela:
True that!

Lily Adventuresses! Episode 2 Chapter 4: After optional event in Didal Theater, Sinoloan

Love Fairy:
As a fairy, I always get fascinated with the performing arts.
And no, I don’t come here to learn any pick-up lines.

Aspiring Actor:
“THE KINGDOMS OF THE WORLD SHALL BOW TO THE MIGHT OF… THE LORD OF GOATS!”
Yes, I know it’s overacting, but there are times where we must chew the scenery in order to connect with the audience.

Ephnel Halewell, Actress:
This is, like, my first ever feminine role ever, because I took up masculine roles ever since I started acting.
But I got this.

Nilin Shimozaka, Actress:
It seems more and more audiences want “girls in glasses” type characters.
Not that I’m complaining, since I actually wear them because of my astigmatism.

Greatest heist in history

From your position, you see a shadow dropping from the roof, standing still for a moment, and then starting to move methodically around the room. When the shape comes closer, you realize it’s… Afterthought.

…did he just break into a supervillain lair? The nerve of that guy.

Afterthought passes you, freezes, does a double take in your direction - he’s in his caper gear, so you can’t exactly see where he’s looking at - and then approaches you, slowly and carefully like a wild animal.

”What are you doing here?” you hiss.

”Well, I don’t know,” he shrugs. ”What does a tech thief do in an R&D lab? Is this,” he gestures vaguely at your predicament, ”a part of your plan, or do you need help?”

”What do you care?”

”I mean, I do usually prefer blueprints - they’re so much easier to carry - but how could I resist a heist to steal a vigilante?

Jurisdiction dispute

”You’re under arrest,” Gauge said, eying him cautiously.

”No I’m not,” Vortex replied. ”This place – ” he spread his hands in a gesture covering all the surrounding ruins and rubble – ”This place isn’t your jurisdiction, you lost that right when your people bombed it into oblivion. There are rules, Gauge. This is Ashguard land now, and you are trespassing.”

”Vortex – ”

”Get off my turf.”

You’re not Ashguard anymore either, if I recall.”

”True. But I am of this land. And unlike you, I can still see the monsters.”

Everyone can see the monsters.”

”Not like this. Not the real ones. Not the ones in shadows, or the ones with masks. Not the ones pretending to be your friends.”

”What are you – ”

”Look, Gauge, I don’t want to fight you. You’re not my enemy. But I have no time for this foolishness.”

I’ve not written much lately due to a shoulder issue that popped up over the weekend, so I thought I’d just share a bit of world-building from my A Fae Heart novella that I’m not writing yet. But it was something I wanted to work on while recovering. Still, it never happened because I did not feel up to it.

In this world, fae magic consists of the manipulation of nature (i.e earth and plants, etc). Fae of the royal bloodline also possess the ability to manipulate air (which is how the “Veil”, a powerful spell that hides fae places and hides fae features [golden or amber eyes], works).

Fae hold their magic within their hearts, which acts as a container, and as they use spells, it drains, and if they run out, they cannot cast another spell until they replenish it by returning to the fae realm.

Also, there is a rare condition among the fae which results in their heart constantly consuming magic to strengthen their bodies. The inflicted are harmless in the fae realm as magic is everywhere, but if one ends up in the human realm, they quickly become violent due to the overwhelming hunger for magic. But they do not harm humans as they have no magic to speak of; they either ignore or toss them aside.

I really like the concept in my head even if it came from fear of something going wrong in my heart surgery (although mine was a valve repair, not a transplant, it still got me curious about what would happen to a human who received a supernatural creature’s heart).

I don’t have any writing (since I’m horribly behind schedule) to share… but I can share something else.

I took a snapshot of this sometime back. For anyone curious, these are my itch stats for Scarlet Sorceress right at the 30-day mark. Managed to scrape 5000 views.

(I’m not sure how cogdemos calculates the view count, though. At one point, the cogdemos version had 33 clicks but 337 views even though it was set to private viewing.)

Well… I suppose itch managed to provide a good quantity of extra traffic. :slightly_smiling_face:

EDIT:

I meant link clicks on this forum. The gray number that goes up next to a link every time it gets clicked.

I don’t know about the clicks (I didn’t know those are even tracked?) but I’m pretty sure that if someone had the game open, every refresh counts as a view.

Could be a couple things: multiple people refreshing or restarting often (sometimes demos will force reset if left unattended long enough, though idk if this ticks the counter or not), and people could’ve shared the link externally in chats.

I can’t believe it’s the 15th already.

some minor battle planning with a smart-ass MC

“Give me a bit of a head start,” you murmur. “I can skirt around here,” you wave to the arc of forest to the left of the clearing, “and flank them shortly after you engage the wolves. I can probably get a fatal hit on one if I can catch it off guard.”

Maymie taps her lower lip, her eyes taking your measure before flicking back to where the wolves are. “Yes, that could work. Actually, it’s a great idea and I’m mad you’re the one that came up with it.”

“Well,” you say, “I am a veritable genius.”

“Don’t speak.” Maymie pinches her fingers together in front of your face. “I’ll give you a twenty second head start. Jem, you’re with me since I’ll be the target.”

fight scene with a reluctant MC being used as a mana conduit

She stops to look at you, a mischievous glint in her eye. “Actually… I just had a better idea. Hero, how are your mana reserves right now?”

You take a moment to ‘look’ inwards at the threads of mana that flow through you, then another second to examine the mana strung around the forest like cobwebs in an abandoned house. “Good. I haven’t really used any in days, so I’m pretty much bursting — and there’s more than enough around here to draw from for a quick recovery… uh, why?”

“Because…” Maymie drawls, “you’re going to pump me up so full of mana I’ll take them both out in an obliterating storm I could’ve only dreamed about before!”

“Oh…” You look to Jem. “Please heal me if I pass out.”

He startles. “Uh… Yes. Of course! But I’d rather you didn’t. Pass out, that is.”

Based on the excited look on Maymie’s face and the way she’s sucking ambient mana into herself, you think there’s a pretty good chance you won’t be able to avoid overextending yourself.

You raise your staff into the air, swishing the branches around slightly as if it were a broom and you’re attempting to catch the cobwebs of mana in the bristles. You feed as much mana as you can into your staff, pleased with the amount it can hold in comparison to your old training staff, before taking a small thread and hooking it into Maymie’s distinctive mana aura.

“Ready?” she asks you.

You grimace with effort. “As ready as I’ll ever be, I think.”

“Great!” You can feel the mana crackling off of Maymie’s skin as she steps through the bushes and into the clearing.

You opt to stay in the undergrowth, Jem at your side but with an easy path straight to Maymie in case something goes wrong.

Maymie breathes in deep, puts her hands towards her knees and then pulls them up, as if picking up something large and heavy, her palms to the sky. “Time for a storm!” she shouts before the first bolt of lightning descends and strikes a Dire Wolf just as it stands, having noticed Maymie’s approach.

Three more bolts fall from the sky, striking wolf and ground alike, indiscriminate in their damage. Then four more strike, two more, five more…

“Send me more mana!” Maymie shouts, her short, red hair raising and falling in waves of static that roll off her attack.

You pluck the thread of mana that connects your reserves to Maymie’s and open the channel; creating something closer to a rope than a thread.

Maymie whoops with delight and power. At one point you can’t see anything but the white of the lightning before it all suddenly stops.

You sway on your feet, depleted, but conscious.

Jem catches you, his hands on your shoulders to keep you upright.

“Whew,” Maymie huffs out. She’s breathing heavily, but takes a few steps into the clearing that is now smoky and charred. She stops by two blackened lumps that used to be the Dire Wolves. “I might have gone overboard — just a teensy bit.”

“Just a little bit,” Jem says as he leads you over to a fallen log to sit on.

“Thanks,” you murmur, sinking onto the log gracelessly.

ABSOLUTE CINEMA!

Sadly the only thing I wrote this month was faulty Javascript being referenced by equally faulty html5.

On the brightside. I just had an epiphany!

Prince/Princes goes offworld to meet their possible bachelor/bachelorette/bacheloperson.

Suffers a Coup’de’Etat on said Royal homeworld.

Its stucked in a refurbished generation ship with no funds, no place to go, a lot of civilian crew depending on the MC and said bachelopersons who mostly distrust/despise the MC.

On the bright side?

An Interstellar Space Discovery Home and Health Channel is interesting in financing MC’s Government-in-exile … In exchange of a contract of exclusivity for a…

I feel like there’s some cool options if this system of magic really comes from the casters heart. All sorts of cool emotional and connective plot aspects possible then.

So agreed! This year is on steroids, for sure. I have a lot of work to do if I am going to reach my goals for the year. Two nice snippets. I like the playful nature in the first bit and some strong imagery in the second one

Seems like some good options!

For snippet day, here is a scene from the infamous volleyball game, if the boys win:

Summary

Not done yet with this never-ending volleyball game but nearly there now. I think for sure by the end of the week I’ll be able to proceed on.

Phew! I finally finished a section - The Hall of Reptiles. I am not moving on to the Hall of Petrology. I will also figure out if I can shorten my process. I’ve completed 27 of 46 exhibits - but at this rate it will take me too long to write the book - as this is only the first chapter/ 1936! I am not sure yet how to do that - but that seems like the right next step, to bring this down in scope. Any advice on starting an IF, it gets out of scope, and what you did to get it back into scope?

The protagonist for the novella is human so she cannot go to the Fae realm so she only has the magic that is left in the heart she received. The first time she accesses magic is when one of the inflicted Fae attacks her and she casts out of fear. So yeah her emotional state will definitely affect things.
