Thanks for all the advice, Jacic. I appreciate it, coming from an accomplished story-smith, with several games under your belt.
Preparing my game for submission is almost as hard as making the game! My anxious brain keeps running through myriad disaster scenarios. I have this nagging feeling that my query email has found its way to the HG junk folder!
When I compile within the CS scene package the images do not show- but they do when I use the run-server command. Is this expected? (Is this what you meant by re-uploading all the images- I am having an orc-brain day (every day).
EDIT: The checkpoint system does work here though.
Thinking back, I havenāt actually run a compiled game through dashingdons without using CSIDE to create scenes out of the images (which I would not recommend for your game given the number of pictures!) I thought it would work, but maybe itās filing the compiled file in a way that it can pick up the uploaded images to link them in. Sorry I meant youād need to reupload the smaller size images if you wanted feedback on how they looked now in the game.
Definitely works through itch if thatās something you ever need to do as Iāve got several game with images up on there. (From memory you need to put all the images in the same folder as the compiled file for them to show up.)
I have managed to get the size down to 53MB, this last drop was because of a title music file duplicated within the scenes folder. So, we are all good to go now!
I have just sent Green Journey off to Hosted Games. I will try my best to keep you all updated as to its progress.
As I have mentioned, I do plan future updates, once the game is released. This will depend, somewhat, on the reception. I also have some ideas for future DLC- though I will soon start a new project which will take immediate priority. Once I have begun the new project, and have made it a decent size, I plan to release it on the forum. This will take some time.
I will be taking down the demo in the next few days or so. If anyone is deep within the game and would like a little extension before I do so, please let me know.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you who have gone on this adventure with me.
Let me know if your new project is going to start. I enjoyed playtesting, playing around, and code searching in this game. Maybe your new project will be as interesting as this one.
Youāll find it here, in the forums, Patrick. Be a while yet. It will have a different flavour to Green Journey, though will be set in the same world at a future time. I hope it will be an adventure worthy of embarking on.
This is something I considered for a DLC. As it stands, you are a wild orc from The Plains and have your own tribe. BUT in the old age route, your āadoptedā offspring can rise to be the Lord of Greenburg, if you impressed Ser Snorc in your youth, during the Grandardgard tournament.
A lordly path is a very good idea for a future DLC, or an update depending on length- though the ācoreā game is about being a ātrue orcā, rather than an orc mimicking human ways.
Watch this space.
EDIT: I will be taking the demo offline later today (7th May) so please let me know if you are in the middle of a game and still actively playing and I will wait a few more days. Otherwise, the demo will be put to rest.
EDITEDIT: Ok- demo has been taken down. I hope the next time we see our orc game appear it will be on the Hosted Games label! Iāll still check in here to see if anyone leaves comments/questions and stuff.
Iām looking forward to seeing the āHosted Games authorā label next to your name, @NumberedEntity! You deserve it. This is a great piece of writing, with just the right balance of levity and gravitas.
Thanks, @Aeternitas, for playing and supporting my game. I think it turned it out well and much of this is due to the support of those who gave this game a go.
Iāll keep you updated on the gameās journey to Hosted Games.
@NumberedEntity
How, just how did I missed this WIP, and how did you do a 1.5 million in a year??!!,
Anyway congrats for finishing and submitting your story!!, I will absolutley buy this on steam
Yes, the game has gotten much larger than I expected- though rapid progress was possible for a few reasons.
-Having a plan, based on an old 30,000-word card swiper game I once made. Really was the main factor!
-Having a degree of free time that allowed me to set somewhat disciplined writing habits.
-Being rubbish at coding and not understanding gosub properly. Or multireplace, so too much copy-paste under different labels.
-Later in development, understanding the need for firm boundaries and limits.
-And receiving positive feedback and constructive criticism which helped keep me going.
I hope many HGers and CoGers will enjoy being an orc. Whatever you get up to in this game, I think being an orc is always a fun time.
I have been in contact with the lovely folks at Hosted Games and have a rough estimate for the completion of the content review and copy edit process. It is likely that Green could be back in my hands, to give it a going over, at the end of July (roughly).
I would very much like to have a steam release but will have to wait to know. Iām not sure what qualifies a game for Steam- maybe size, to a degree, and general engagement. I have provided all the assets needed for a Steam release, so fingers crossed that the Crone of Fates helps it on its way.
EDIT: And much glory to you, fellow orc, for your support through this time!
I remember having a discussion with a mod a looong time ago. IIRC, and if nothing has changed, itās a mix of length, quality, and overall content. You know, generic āwill this sellā kind of criteria. No real rules as far as Iām aware.
I have every reason to believe you can get a Steam page. Iām excited for the day that you hear about it.
Someone did try asking the question of how the decision-making process works directly to CoG staff before, but the answer was simply canāt comment. I would guess things beyond your control, like number of available steam slots and current selection of games in the publishing queue, would also be a factor.
For the record, HG did get back to me about the steam release pretty quickly, but this might be a case-by-case experience. If they donāt mention it, you could also initiate the discussion and see what happens.
Also, not related, but regarding your other WIP, I was talking about the States and Alliances stats page when I was talking about breaking it into separate pages.
I have the feeling they keep it quiet so they have full control over it compared to giving authors some sort of checklist they need to hit and make it seem like theyāre arbitrarily denying some that meet the requirements.
Based on my experience in watching WIPs, this game 110% matches the qualities needed.
Really the only criteria that COG has to put games on steam is if they think theyāll make enough money out of it, using subjective criteria like size/fan engagement, this one easily meets that standard, so Iād be genuinely stunned if it didnāt make the cut
