After Dark (scientifically accurate apocalyptic horror) UPDATE 28 DEC

Hello! Got to say, scientifically accurate or not, I always enjoy these kinds of stories. It’s especially interesting when the MC can have some kind of issue that can potentially make things more difficult to their survival.

On that note, I’m curious to how and why you chose the challenges currently in the demo(and specifically interested on fibromyalgia)?

@Qorder
About the mental health: it should drop in that point as well. If it doesn’t, it’s an oversight and I’ll correct it after work. Thank you

About the lore: You asked a great question, and I’m glad to see it got noticed. The answer will come in the next updates.

Your typos correction are all very valuable as well. Thank you again!

@Outrageous the short answer is that I suffer from fibromyalgia myself, and I thought it was nice to portray chronic pain in an apocalyptic setting.

I’m sorry to hear that… Fibromyalgia is really not fun, but I was pleasantly surprised to see it included. It’s nice to see representation for it.

When MC sat on the clothes they put on the ground and felt uncomfortable from the pain it caused, I was like “Ugh… That’s such a mood. :disappointed: … Can hardly wait for more!”

Heh, I thought that since I know how it is, the least I can do is put my knowledge into good use!
Jokes aside —thank you

So… I’ve found a style guide for Choice of Games somewhere inside the forum and realized that in fiction writing, you usually use the em dash (—) without spaces. The guide is more a recommendation than a requirement, but you might find this useful as well.

Hi guys. I’ve been on a long hiatus due to health issues, but I’ll update After Dark soon --hopefully this weekend. Get ready!

Oi @Daleko save features is off/broken, you haven’t yet fixed MC/sibling names… I mean you can still select the same name for both of 'em.

And while leaving the shop with Michael, selecting sunscreen gave an error.

Hi @Empress_Nightmare, the thread has only been unlocked, but as stated in my previous message, the game hasn’t been update yet. You will have to wait for at least a few more days for it. Thanks for checking in

Hope you get well soon. Very excited to hear the good news about your health and the wip as well.

Yeah, that happened to me as well. Though I’m starting to think all the options lead to this.

By the way, on the first time exiting the house you can fill up what looks like infinite water bottles in the bathroom. Ended up with thirteen days worth of water.

I’m excited to see what happens next on this weekend!

Good eye, @Verdancer! For some reason it had never come up before. I’ve fixed the problem now, sorry—no more endless water from the next update! :stuck_out_tongue:

I really hope the update lives up to expectations!

The saves won’t work

UPDATE LOG

So, I’ll try to be brief.

The size of the game has almost tripled (from roughly 12000 to about 31000 words, excluding commands). Keep in mind, however, that the game has a mainly horizontal development, with many choices and consequences. Given the very high customization and immersion in the game, this makes for a slow progression forward. I hope you will understand and agree with my choice to carry on multiple gameplay possibilities together, instead of developing a single linear story.

On the technical side:

  • I should have fixed all of the bugs reported here and on Discord, but there’s still a little bit of a glitch here and there.
  • The hard save system doesn’t work well because of the very long scenes. Therefore I suggest you not to use it too much, and just use it to load your initial settings if you want to (at the end of the prologue, and after the choice of the path).
  • There are still a few blocked choices. They are few and unlock just discursive/lore scenes, which will be coming soon in a minor update. This obviously doesn’t apply to the two paths locked, which will be developed at the end of the current one.
  • Please let me know of any errors, issues, and any other concerns. These will likely be present especially by choosing to explore during the first day (1-4 hours of activity), as I would need days just to test each scene. I’m sorry, I’ll have to rely on your (bad) luck for this!

A few questions for you:

  1. Do you feel a need for a guide page explaining some of the stats?
  2. How do you feel so far about romantic autonomy?
  3. Do you have any particular concerns about future developments?

Finally, I wish to apologize for the long wait. I have had, and still have, some health issues that require much, much rest. However, please know that I haven’t quit on you, and that I will do my best to fix any bugs that may pop up as quickly as possible.

Enjoy!

I just found this today and so far I am very much intrigued and enjoying the demo!

To answer your questions

  1. I’m the type of person that doesn’t really focus on stats. I kind of just follow the personality of the character I’m playing as and hope for the best hahahah. I only ever checked Hunger and food hahahaha Mostof the stats seem pretty self explanatory too me.

  2. I love the autonomy so far (though I haven’t played without it so I can’t really compare haha) I like the idea of the other characters taking that initiative. I have played both bold and shy characters but I have a soft spot for shy characters.

  3. My one concern (keep in mind I have no idea how this coding works) is that the code for all the paths are gonna be soooo much that for any future plans it might become too complicated and break.i have no idea if this is even possible but it just seems like a lot to try and fit into a neat package. Of course this one is all your choice and as long as you’re taking care of yourself as you work on this project we will be here to cheer you on

Edit: Forgot to mention I came across 2 error codes

The 1st is this one: happened at the clothing shop

Screenshot_20211121-224400_Chrome|236x500

The second I didn’t get an image on and I don’t know the error code but it was when we go exploring, find the grocery bag, listen to sounds, break through back door and when we are deciding to take it I clicked the second option the one about not taking everything because we don’t want to be selfish and throw stuff out (something along those lines)

I wasn’t able to get all the way too that option on replays haha

Hey, I had this error too.
Plus I had errors when looting the house:
(i can’t upload pictures so I will just type it hehe)

  1. when you listen to through the closed door, line 1287, “it illegal to fall into an *else statement”
  2. when you go through the kitchen window (I think), line 1659, "increasing indent not allowed, expected 16 was 17

I think most stats are self-explanatory, I only don’t understand, whats the difference between constitution and mind health and how we can restore/decrease those.

For now, there’s no clear “end game”, or a goal for characters if you will. Its not a big deal now, I really like the tempo you are making for our journey. Dont get me wrong, keeping your company safe and alive is nice but whats the destination here?
