Academy of Arcana [WIP, Demo, Updated 22/04/2019] H*I*A*T*U*S (because: reasons)

I swear I’m not procrastinating, but… I made some things.

Air

Fire

Chaos / Aether

Earth

Light / Time

Water

Also:

I forgot that I started this in 2017, and the game was only supposed to last three years.

Solid piece so far. The start has a nice pace and doesn’t waste too much time on establishing the character. The most amazing part is the attention to the minutiae of the world you’re building. You actually take the time to make the books and code in hundreds of people to emulate the academic atmosphere and setting to the best of your ability.

I suppose you could try focusing more on the story at this time and do the details later so you won’t suffer from project burnout.

Minor Update: The first part of the new Collector quest is done and up. You can start it by looking for a random book in the archives.

It’s not much, but it’s a bit of a puzzle and is absolutely chuck-full of lore.

I’d appreciate feedback on how you solved the quest - was it easy, difficult, random luck? It’s important for me to know.

Anywho, thank you very much. Much love, byeee.

For me, the quest was great, of course, it was a bit of trial and error with 3 or 4 books but I after I read all of them I knew what books I needed to look for.

I know, its just a small part, but I am so happy that you took the time to include the highlighted part :slightly_smiling_face:, its not common so its great that you mentioned that even people who work with the dead still have certain ethics that they dont want to cross.

Oh, and I found a bug when choosing to read a random book.

What do you think about implementing a save system? Or would the save files just crash with each major update and be useless so to say?

Thank you very much! Oooh, yeah, bugs! Gotta love 'em! All creepy crawly in the machine.

It’s super duper fixed now.

That’s great to hear. That’s what I was going for, so now I’m ecstatic

I’m not sure. Originally, I didn’t include it because it I was certain the game would change way too drastically. I’m still mostly of that opinion - I’d consider it once the player actually has the chance to make a character and live them in a bit - when they have the opportunity to create something unique that they’d like to keep.

New Major(ish? Big-ish minor? Middleish? Okay, Medium-ish) update!

My main regret is that there are twelve independent questlines, so while I work very hard at it, it doesn’t seem like much, to be honest. Someday, though.

Anywhooooo, There’s now the start of ‘The Collector: Pt II’, a new and improved quest tracking system in the stats menu, and …

TimberWoolf Rages:

ITS BEEN FIVE HOURS AND THAT’S ALL I’VE MANAGED TO DO???

I’ll be fair to myself, I’ve mostly been writing the lore around the Gods. It’s very interesting, I admit. Look out for a publication in the Archives the next time you visit. (But not now. You’ll be disappointed.)

Oh well. Once you’ve helped The Collector find the book, wait a few days (with the handy help of that ‘Newday (Debug)’ button I haven’t taken away yet. Alternatively, follow your handy questing companion’s advice (the companion is just in your stats menu. That is your companion. You can call her ‘Deborah’.)

Awww, dont beat yourself up about your progress, there will be days where you get done more and some where you wont get don as much, dont worry about it, you are doing a great job .

Sorry if Im being noisy but I love the different schools of magic, do you have some more information on the distinction of the schools? Or, if its not too spoilery, their battle mechanics. I personally love the things that I read about Seedism and I assume that its more a type of magic that takes effect over time and not immediately, like Numerism.

As much as I’d love to say “We’re on a break,” because of coding difficulties or game redesign, I cannot. Unfortunately, we’ve been on pause because of Life™ and vicissitudes of it.

The saddest news of all is that I don’t see an opportunity to progress with this development for the foreseeable future, and that breaks my heart. Five Princes has been my Darling Child since August 2017, and I’m very heartbroken to let it go now. But it is necessary. It is a lesser evil than, say, Capitalism (which totally sucks, by the way). But birds must fly and projects must temporarily be doomed.

And socialism needs to make a dramatic comeback.

So, yeet, I’ll let y’all know when the next BIG update is, but don’t hold your breath.
