A Tale of Heroes (WIP) - 193k words. Updated 31/12/2022 with Chapter 5!

Aha, thank you! I honestly worry about the world-building a lot. I do know some history, and I try to give it as much thought as I can, but there’s always that worry that I’ve missed something, that what I’ve written doesn’t make sense to those better informed than me, or even that I’m insulting someone’s homeland and such. It’s a fine line to walk when I want to change things enough to make it clear that things are different, while still following generally the same trajectory.

I’m very lucky Crete has so much info about it online, it was incredibly helpful in working the specifics out.

Would you believe me if I told you that, when the game was still on the design phase, I was considering making the Monarchs rule over Fiji instead?

In Seeker’s case “juice” is shorthand for alcohol, isn’t it?

Sure, why not?

It would certainly be warmer, and easier to implement the isolationist policy. On the other hand, the isolationism would be LESS noticeable and Crete’s location makes it a better site from which to de-isolate.

No! He- Uh, he adds juice to his drinks.

…Sometimes…

It does allow for further interaction with neighboring countries, at least. Only so many ways I could spin “and then the British showed up again and-” :stuck_out_tongue:

Speaking of interactions, here’s another article I almost forgot. This one isn’t about Crete’s Defense Force, but considering what the story’s direction seems to be, perhaps it’s worth a look?

Is the wiki you keep screenshotting open to the public or is it still closed for development?

Oh, no, these are done on the Wikipedia page proper. I just pick an article similar enough (the Philippine-American MDT for the one above, for example), edit it a bit, and then screenshot the preview.

I’ve considered making a wiki, but it does sound like a considerable time-sink. I’d like to add a bit more than just the geopolitical articles and such to it, at least. An article on the League as an institution sounds like the kind of obvious thing to work for.

Hey, look, it’s Tiny NATO.

Funny, because neither Greece nor Cyprus stick to the agreed upon expenditures for their armed forces either. :stuck_out_tongue:

But I’m sure this won’t be activated any time soon, or anything. I mean, it’s not like 2/3rds of Crete’s population relies on food imports from Ukraine, which need to pass by the Bosporus, which is under the control of Crete’s biggest political rival, or anything.

Yeah, my own crazy conspiracy theory remains the same and that is that it has everything to do with the creepy alter ego’s and far less or even nothing at all with the meat-puppets they use as dimensional anchors or something. I’m betting that, unlike most other superhero’s the King and maybe the Queen too are/were powered by or used as dimensional anchors by whatever alternate dimension energy alien other MC and Lat really are too.
As for why other mc seems to want to fight the King? Could be something to do with their Q continuum or whatever, or it could just be their version of a pissing contest, who knows? Well except our dear author of course.

Except for the mc, Lat and maybe the King too…pretty sure ours were caused by energy alien body snatchers using us as their meat-puppets.

Anyway what is the typical age powered people know they have powers? Cause I’m pretty sure mc never had any prior to the alien thing.

I’m sure it’ll be fiiiiiiiiine. (I’m not and it won’t)

Shouldn’t it be made with tinfoil?

Gosh.

At this point, some people probably looks at us as people that wears tinfoil hats. But it’s absolutely a hill that I would die on so I’m gonna go ahead and make my little “Queen ain’t dead” club. New members gets their own tinfoil hat that was made with love. But either way, I can’t wait to see how things goes.

That’s the main resource in the making of a tinfoil hat yes, but mine just so happens to have a very special resource thrown in for good measure. Therefore, my tinfoil hats are special.

Powers are meant to show up while you’re young. The later you get them, the weaker they normally are. That’s the generally accepted understanding.

Seeker doesn’t know when exactly his showed up, but his first memory includes him having (and using) them. Forlorn’s had his since he was a child as well. When his parents started teaching him self-defense, he already had super strength.

Ignis got hers when she was 7. I actually answered an ask on Tumblr about the scenario behind it (the team getting powers, I mean) a little while ago: A Tale of Heroes on Tumblr

The MC and Lat getting powers this late is definitely eyebrow-raising, but powers aren’t understood well enough for people to go “hold up, this is an unprecedented case that needs to be investigated completely!”. Plenty of people go their whole lives without using their powers for much, after all.

I assume those are mostly the people with underwhelming powers…
Like if my power was something like manifested finger blades (super mini wolverine) but I’d feel everything I cut as if I did it with my bare fingers, so cutting diamond…hurts like a whole lot and even just cutting paper would feel like getting constant paper cuts…in which case I’d go most of my life without using my powers too since simply using scissors, knives or industrial tools would clearly be the superior option and user experience in most cases.

For people with basically the classical superman powerset the mc seems to have now I’m going to assume it really would be almost impossible to not have used them before if the mc had always had them, ergo my conclusion that he mc did not, in fact, always have them on account of them belonging to an alien bodysnatcher who only invaded us during that earthquake, or the quake was a side effect of the invasion. Going by our teammates the super-strength thing, in particular, would seem like something the mc and people in their environment ought to have noticed, had the mc always been powered.

Yeah, I’m afraid that @idonotlikeusernames is right and the Other Me’s are something foreign or extraterrestrial implanting on us. But at the same time, I’m not sure they’re independently sentient, necessarily. I’m kind of thinking about My Hero Academia’s Quirk Vestiges. The concept isn’t the exact same, but basically what if Other Me isn’t necessarily an alien entity with its own agenda, but rather a force that molds itself to the host’s consciousness? It becomes a part of the host and interacts with them through the subconscious, perhaps granting them certain abilities like, say, instinctive foresight.

Though, I will say that this story has pretty decent odds of going extraterrestrial, considering its general inspiration by Dragonball and also some…other suspicions of mine.

Aren’t you essentially describing what’s actually happening with Shiggy at this point in the manga? But the way you brought it up also reminds me of the Singularity theory that’s been mentioned several times in BNHA that it’s basically a doomsday scenario

Yeah, basically I am describing what’s happening with Shigaraki, except our co-resident intelligence appears to be a lot less domineering than All For One.

I don’t think Quirk Singularity would be in play here since afaik being powered doesn’t have connection to heritability whereas the whole point of Quirk Singularity is that, as Quirks combine in new and unforeseen ways, eventually you’ll get absolutely insane Quirks like New Order and One For All which will fracture society if not reality itself. That isn’t possible without heritability and we don’t seem to have that in AToH.

Yeah, powers in AToH aren’t exactly inheritable. The vast majority of the cast’s parents actually weren’t powered, for example.

Victoria’s dad was a low-ranked army grunt, for example, and I think I’ve made it pretty clear Victoria would knock Seeker on his ass.

Can’t wait to see it.

I’d pay good money to see it but I’m betting we’re going to have free front row seats to the beatdown

Looking forward to seeing Victoria fade people left and right and finding out why she passed on the Seeker title.

So, the more recent art pieces on the major characters are great, don’t get me wrong, but I’m still stuck on the first versions from this thread’s first post. Those were good, but as these things go, not my will but thine be done.
