A Tale of Heroes (WIP) - 193k words. Updated 31/12/2022 with Chapter 5!

A four year old with ability to flatten buildings would be cool tbf, XD. Okay but more importantly after reading that I want to have a bad ending in my first play through now just to see how it turns out. But thanks for indulging me.

I swear to you, Gloria has no outstanding political beliefs that are based on quotes and stories of pre-historical Roman times.

If you ask him, trans rights are human rights, LGBTQ+ people deserve all of the protection that the law can and should offer, healthcare and tuition should, while not entirely provided by the government, at least subsidized heavily enough that every American has access to them, the minimum wage should be increased, worker protections need to be enacted and updated, etc.

He’s a pretty good cookie, I think.

… Just don’t bring up the World Wars.

Oh, and before I forget, I wrote another short piece to explain a bit of the lore, this time about the formation of the Liberation and Revolutionary parties:

Well, to be entirely honest, I don’t have purely bad endings planned, at least as of yet. There’s gonna be bad results, of course, which lead the player to start off in a worse position in Book 2, but nothing that doesn’t allow you to continue your story. I don’t get to make your lives harder if I end them, after all.

Though there might be some mentions of lurking threats and the like. I’m thinking of adding a couple PoVs switches soon-ish, to explore some stuff. I have one Seeker-Ignis planned so far, as well as a pure Gloria one. I don’t know how much people like them, but they allow me to explore some interactions, and this is a bit of a spoiler, but it’ll be the first appearance of Victoria in the story, and she…

She has some thoughts.

Columbus was from Genoa, in what is now Italy. He wasn’t just an explorer, he was also appointed Governer of the Indies by the ā€˜Spanish’ crown and was directly involved in mass slavery, torture and forced conversions. His brutality was such that he was eventually stripped of his title.

Loved this when I first played it. Getting ready for another playthrough. I just need to know if I can begin romancing Forlorn yet? I’ll get through to him somehow, even if the code tries to stop me!

Gloria is too perfect, that is always extremely suspicious. And of course my mc is suspicious of both Gloria’s and Maxwell’s plans for the League…given that his membership in the League was not entirely voluntary and he literally cannot afford to quit it and for once that is not for the money.

Besides while my mc may start getting paid very well in the near future, he still remembers where he came from and is pretty much a REVO partisan by this point, so Gloria is from the wrong party to begin with.

Ironically, his son ended up becoming a Governor of the Indies as well, but where his father was too brutal, the son was too incompetent. He ended up losing the post after a couple native rebellions as well as trying to defy the Crown in Cuba.

… Not the best family, I don’t think.

Well, you’re certainly welcome to try! Forlorn could use people to be close with, he’s very lonely.

Partly because of his own choices, but also partly because no one would truly understand him.

…Well, maybe Seeker would be a good listening buddy, but between you and me, Forlorn is a tad scared of Seeker.

I think Chapter 5 will begin to show one serious flaw of Gloria’s, and I hope that at least some of you can catch onto how it’s a very serious problem.

Hint One: It has the same net-positive result as something Stratton can do, but the means Gloria uses carry far more consequences.

Hint Two: Gloria is the spanish word for Glory.

Sidenote: Work on Chapter 5 has been a tad slow lately, mostly because I’ve had to take up the job of caretaker in my house. I also had a bit of a problem with the segue in from Chapter 4 to Chapter 5, which impacts how the rest of the chapter must flow, but I believe I have figured it out now.

It should be smooth sailing from here on out, and I’ve been working in some extra feedback for Chapter 4, including the chance to be on your own for a little while.

… Well, assuming you don’t count Other!MC as a different person, anyway.

Not like you should.

… Right?

You already know that my mc does tend to think of the entity living inside him as essentially another person…because contemplating the alternative of him having a serious mental condition like multiple personality disorder, is even more upsetting.

So, since my mc pretty much knows he never had or at least manifested any sort of powers before that earthquake and blue energy incident, his working theory is and remains that the powers come from a Star Trek-esque energy alien who has decided to make his body its host and presumably takes the form of his clone to annoy him extra. :unamused:
At some point, once he gets bold or frustrated enough my mc will probably try asking Other!MC to either reveal their true form or at least take the appearance of [insert whatever super hot male celebrity, other than Mars, my mc has a bit of a crush on]. :persevere:

Now that my mc has mostly come to terms with being a part of the League he is moving, mentally, to actually dealing with and trying to figure out Other!MC, particularly since the powers of his clone are pretty much tangled up with his feelings, fears and uncertainties about his budding romance with Mars.

In all honesty, I don’t think I’m willing, or anywhere near qualified enough, to tackle such conditions in a proper manner, so your MC doesn’t have too much to worry about yet. Other!MC’s existence isn’t related to a real world mental condition, though the idea of the MC going ā€˜oh, good, I have voices up there now’ does sound like a pretty stress-relieving way of dealing with it. :smile_cat:

Y’know, I hadn’t considered making that a possible request to Other!MC, but now that you bring it up, that sounds like a riot to write.

ā€œLook, MC, you need to-ā€

ā€œYeah, yeah, but before that, can you turn into Jason Momoa for a second?ā€

"I- WHO?"

Ah, the Minoans. A treasure trove of information and neat facts to add to my small, blossoming country.

I’ve actually been reading into the history of Crete for the past few months, and I was actually flabbergasted at just how… much of it exists. I originally picked Crete after banging my head against the wall for a good couple weeks, since I was unable to find a region that ticked all of the boxes I wanted. Crete turning out to be so full of myths and terrifying legends of the past was a great coincidence.

A lot of this is actually explored in the ATOH version of Crete. The University of Crete is actually a much bigger center of study in this universe, and more than a few talented archeologists have graduated from it. The Phaistos Disk is in a Cretan Museum, as are a few replicas of Talos and such. Most of the ancient sites of the Minoans are also reconstructed to a more heavy degree than they were by Greece irl.

The Palace of Knossos actually served as an improptu HQ during the Battle of Crete too, kind of like Shuri Castle for the Japanese. A lot of Crete’s current symbols also use the double-headed axe, which is everywhere in Knossos, as well as depictions of bulls. The flag of the Cretan Army, for example, has double-headed axes, and its Gendarmerie (the police of Crete, basically) use the bull’s head.

Other few things I’ve, uh… used are names. Since the Byzantines, the Venetians and the Ottomans never took over the island, a lot of the names given to the different towns/cities wouldn’t make sense, so I’ve had to change a few. Just for an example: Kydonia (Chania irl), Chandax (Heraklion irl), Rethymno, Lasynthos (Lasithi irl) and Etea (which is Sithia in our world). ATOH Crete is much more in touch with their Minoan connections.

You wanna know what is also very funny? See, Crete’s Mount Ida is, supposedly at least, where Rhea hid baby Zeus from Cronos during the latter’s chomping of his offspring. This hiding place was further helped by Cretan Kourettes, who did incredibly noisy rituals and mock battles to disguise Zeus’ cries and protect him from Cronos.

… Boy, I sure am glad that there’s no being of incomparable power hidden inside Mount Ida who also conveniently has hundreds upon hundreds of Guardians dedicated to keeping her safe until the moment is right, and she’s ready to face the whole world.

…

Wait a minute.

Not exactly who my mc would request…but something like that, yeah, of course that part only comes after openly accusing Other!MC of being an energy alien.

I would hope not, possession by energy aliens isn’t in the psychiatric DSM manual…yet.
I mean you can always make up a mental condition…it’s not like most fiction depicts such things as amnesia realistically anyways. :man_shrugging:
But, yeah, in-universe my mc is probably glad it isn’t a mental condition…though of course it is still a low key fear of his. :cold_sweat:

That’s true, and there is something there that I don’t entirely know if it has any basis in real life, but I plan to explore eventually, and I’m looking forward a lot to how people will take it, because while I personally think it’s a believable thing to have happen, it isn’t a justification.

… And maybe I should stop talking about the end game now. Oh, well, hold onto your seats! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah, man, I can’t wait until your MC gets to have the Other!MC reveal. Poor dude’s about to have a lot more questions regarding himself soon enough.

Hey guys, new person to this wip, didn’t know what what I was getting into, and I loved it.
The change of pace from a generic superhero story to a complicated clusterfuck character wise, combined with good historical lore and witty humor drew me in.
I went into this game blind, and I decided to go the Ignis route due to the ominous implications in her RO description, and I’m so glad I did. After I finished the route I read up on all the lore and discussions on here and on tumblr to help me comprehend the sheer awesomeness I had just played through.

My only question is, can we be evil? That question may seem far fetched but I feel the way the game is going it’s not a net zero possibility. We started off getting strange powers as a random college kid, who then got shanghaied into joining a dangerous hero team (with admittedly complicated and awesome people) with the other option being tested in a lab. From there the MC has suffered hounding from the media, hounding from the leader of the free world, their own subconscious telling them that they are not good enough, extreme stress levels that would make a college student cramming a day before a final pity you, and a potential extremely messy break up that is not your fault, and will inevitably cause friction teamwise. So my question is, can the MC at some point snap and say NO MORE to all the pressure and go do their own thing(which can include doing some definitely not heroic things). Thanks in advance!

I love the characters, they’re very well defined, Forlorn is my fave. One minor thing is I chose to play as a woman yet when my MC talks to Lat about her future self she says, ā€œHe made me pick.ā€ One high-level thing I would suggest is maybe more MC personality choices/control.

I think we should go with our MC being hero first, because the title is " A tale of heroes " :vv. But not gonna lie, the idea of MC becoming an anti-hero or a villain completely is fascinating. Maybe after finishing this sequel, if @Jjcb still hold the love and inspiration for this timeline, for this verse, maybe the author can write another alternative story, a spin off or something else about us going in different path. But in the end, it’s all depending on whether the author likes to continue or not

And I totally agree. If the author wants to go with messy hero relationships, that’s an interesting trope on its own.The fact that the potential for a heel turn is what got me curious. It’s probably going to go with the standard of you saving the day at the end(relationships not withstanding). I posted my question as I feel, unlike some other games, a heel turn has been, even inadvertently, set up, at least in the Ignis route. From Forlorn planning to use you to get Ignis and Seeker together, Ignis potentially using you to ignore her problems, and Lat trying to warn you in a roundabout manner, in addition to all the other stressors. It can make a person potentially break. Finally, I believe unlike other authors, this may be the one to pull it off.

Yep agree with you right here.

Hello, new folks! I’m happy to see you’re enjoying the story, thank you so much for all the compliments! I appreciate them a lot c’:

On the topic of an evil path for the MC, I’m afraid that’s not something that I have planned for this story.

While it’s undeniably true that the MC has a lot on their plate, and can theoretically have enough reason to not like more than a few of their co-workers, the way that things will… ā€œbreakā€, so to say, shall make it so that working with the League is the only route available.

That may sound unbelievable right now, and I can’t explain why that’ll be the case, since a lot of it is tied up in revelations of the end-game, but it’d realistically require just making two versions of the following games, and give the player a lot less avenues for success, or even survival.

That said, though, there’s something to remember. As @sal mentions, the League isn’t just a generic superhero group. It’s a governmental entity supposed to keep the peace and ā€œprotectā€ the people.

It’s got a bit of a darker tint than you’d expect from the TV versions of the Avengers, or the Justice League. Forlorn, Ignis and Seeker all have killed before, and it’s likely they’ll have to do so again. They don’t have too many qualms about it, either. Stratton wants to turn the League into a political tool, and while Gloria claims to not want the same, only God knows what his actual plan is. The player can already hurt dozens of people, perhaps permanently.

And things will continue to get more extreme.

So while it’s true that you’ll have to side with the League, that doesn’t mean the MC must remain (or even be in the first place!) a paragon of virtue, liberty, and justice. Darker, more cost-efficient methods of solving problems, more… ā€œpermanentā€ responses, and a whole load of not-so-pure choices will become available as the story progresses.

As mentioned above, it’s absolutely true that too much stress can break a person, and lead them to consider actions or positions that they had always stayed away from. And while I assure you that I have no plans to force the MC into doing these actions or considering them, it is something that I plan to explore in some measure, through certain members of the cast.

So while the MC (and Lat!) are irrevocably tied to the League, how… ā€œpureā€ this side remains is still very much up to interpretation.

ā€œI did what I had toā€ sounds a lot less hollow when it’s your life and those of the millions behind you that are at risk.

I just finished your Demo (multiple times) as I really enjoyed it. All of the RO are great. I do wish I could romance S & F but I have a feeling there are going to reasons why that’s not possible. I like there are options to play either a traditional optimistic hero & a more reluctant or standoffish sort of hero. One thing I do have to say is that I have never wanted to slug myself more than when I had to battle myself. Our failure irks me so much but in a way that makes me determined to achieve success. Even if it’s only the hollow victory of knocking the ā€œother meā€ out. lol Happy writing, I can’t wait to see what happens next in this story.

There’s the situation on the rooftop with a multitude of civilians who have suffered mind control or something of the like… there’s the choice to be ā€œefficient and quickā€ wich sounds like what u said:
