A SHRIEK OF ASH AND FIRE 1(WIP) [approx 70K UPDATE, 2.07 Million TOTAL-26th April 2026] (2.21 Million on Patreon)

@Zahmed Lol! I will say that no single choice kills Frelsisaire if we have left behind a strong fleet. But your thinking is correct in that the Road Pirates are mobile warriors. To defend a patch of land does not come naturally to them, so you truly thought it through just like a Road Pirate!

Haha! Yes, we must apologise @Vertigo1 ! To me, Raith is a more complicated character than Revira; there’s an extra layer or two to him, at least in Book 1. Raith and Revira are both questionable, and the ‘twin’ thing definitely adds another dynamic. Again, as with Revira, the Raith route has his RO as one of the central themes; we become locked into it.

Originally, as ROs were going to be less of a thing, I planned for the twins to basically be just the same, only a gender switch, to try and cover player preference. It didn’t feel right. Revira got the ‘base’ personality, the one I first planned, but Raith developed into his very own creature. I mean, they both do horrible things, but Raith, at least in my opinion, is a tad, just a tad, more sympathetic. Dare I say it? A little bit more human?

I’ve been doing the Raith route on my Dispatch test character, and I absolutely agree with this. Raith feels like someone who just really, desperately wants to be loved by everyone and is at least trying to figure out how to get that instead of immediately resorting to mind-controlling everyone. The PC seems to be the only person he really trusts at this point and I don’t necessarily think “I can fix him” but it at least feels possible and my Dispatch who makes bad decisions is going to try.

I think I’m still primarily a Thrayton fan myself, though. Especially now that it seems the pressure is starting to get to him and he’s trying to hold on. Frans was surprising bit of sweetness on the Cold Pact route too, and I was shocked by how much depth Avalina has on the Basilisk route. She might single-handedly get me to finish that route just because I really want to see where her plot is going.

And, of course, breaking poor Sera’s heart by picking anyone else is devastating. So, I know it’s not primarily a romance-focused game, but all the ones I’ve tried have been really interesting and definitely enhanced my playthroughs!

@NumberedEntity Appreciate you sharing that insight! I totally see how twins developed from simple gender-switch versions of one character to independent creatures. The differences they ended up having were really interesting to observe. And it’s just always amazing to see characters grow in new ways as you go on with the story.
And I also agree with the NumberedEntity’s word of god and @Retrokinesis observations about Raith; he really feels a bit more sympathetic and ‘human’ compared to his sister. But hey, I’m not dead set on trying to ‘fix’ him. Rarely see the appeal of the whole ‘fix characters’ thing, and I don’t particularly consider him ‘broken’. That’s just who this character is, I didn’t attach myself to him for the vanilla experience. And it’s not like my own character is a paragon of morality, lol. Raith can make my MC worse instead xD

I really appreciate your message and the time you have taken to explore the various ROs. They have all grown on me, and I hope they provide some variety. One thing I felt was important was making potential ROs’ attraction to our MC seem organic, or at least in line with their characters, rather than having them like us just because we exist.

That you said the ROs enhanced your playthrough perfectly puts into words what I wanted to do with them. I agree, although I am biased! I think they enrich the experience in many ways and add more strands to the story our MC is creating, opening possibilities, good and bad. I am glad I expanded this type of content and don’t think it detracts from the rest of the game, but, as with you and Avalina, perhaps gives a player a reason to push on.

This does mean, in Book 2, that I need to make it worthwhile not to have an RO, too. Thus far, the experience is more fulfilling with an RO option, although the celebration scenes with our pals, rather than spending time with an RO, are poignant in their own way, imo.

@Vertigo1

The future of Raith is unwritten. In Book 2, our MC’s behaviour will have an effect on him. He may or may not reach a point of self-reflection. On the Raith route, he is certainly starting to regard us as a rock, of sorts. Yet… he is still despicable, but something is happening behind his eyes.

FOR EVERYONE!

We are getting so close to the end now. This is only Book 1, and the danger of this is to leave people hanging… This is somewhat inevitable, as much will be unresolved. Some ROs will prove to be, for the moment, somewhat ‘mercenary’, at least in terms of their own survival. We might be able to guess who…

Some of us will feel betrayed by those we had faith in, all of us will feel desperate… The ending is a shared event, with some differences, and, hopefully, a more unique epilogue reflecting the rumours in Behatland about our MC.

Although I don’t plan to leave us completely hopeless. There will be a final glimmer of salvation… And the start of Book 2 will present that possible salvation in many different ways, depending on our choices in Book 1.

Because we are close to the end, I have started thinking a lot about Book 2, which I intend to start after a shorter DLC for Green (I plan for 250k words at most). If Ash and Fire take a long time in the publishing queue, maybe even 2 shorter DLCs, which I could probably put together relatively quickly.

My original plan for A Shriek of Ash and Fire was for one book (which was insane!), now it is for 2 big books. I have also considered if A Shriek of Ash and Fire doesn’t perform well. If this is the case, it might be more viable to complete it in 2 or 3 shorter books, after the first. Both ways have pros and cons, although I prefer 2 big books. Whatever the case, this is a tale that must be told.

I’ll always let the forum know what my plans are. The big quests are to get Book 1 done and to send it away to Hosted Games. Hopefully, things there will go smoothly. If so, I’ll monitor how it goes during release, although this is still a way off considering that HG have a big job with going through my humble effort.

Patreon is a month ahead. I am bad at estimating times, but I think I can get the main game completed in 2 or 3 more monthly updates and place the whole game here for a final beta test. Then I’ll add a save system and achievements, with a final big read-through during that time.

As always, your feedback and questions are appreciated.

In honor of May 4th being starwars day, is it safe to say these ash crawlers are comparable to a star destroyer? Maybe not in size but in presence? Whenever I would watch starwars and a star destroyer would come on screen it was a oh snap moment. I get a similar sense of awe reading about the Gray Torment or Despair’s demise.

May the Fourth be with you! Love the comparison.

You are very perceptive. While not exactly Star Destroyers, they are in the same ballpark.

I will tell you a secret…

I have said before that once I have completed Book 2 of A Shriek of Ash and Fire, I plan to write another IF tale in the Krog Pile universe. This will be in the far future, among the stars.

The star-bound battleship-carriers of certain factions will also be called ‘crawlers’ (maybe star crawlers, void crawlers, or something like that). The lineage of the ash crawlers will be long. Perhaps ‘drays’ and ‘steeds’ will also be the names of certain types of starships, with ‘steeds’ likely being fighters and ‘drays’ perhaps a more versatile, slower craft.

With the crawlers, they can be considered similar to sand crawlers in Star Wars or the mobile cities of Mortal Engines. But they are also like battleships.

With hindsight, many have seen the development of dreadnoughts/battleships pre-WWII as a dead end, easily countered by subs and carriers. In a way, Ash Crawlers are like this. They are formidable and take huge resources to build. On paper, they beat everything but can be countered or avoided by swiftly moving motors.

You put it well; they are meant to inspire awe! The weakness of awesome things is when everyone becomes too used to them. However, when new, few would be foolish to test their mettle against them from sheer intimidation, because they will reduce a city to the ground in a few hours.

EDIT: Maybe space crawler, abyss crawler, vacuum crawler, stellar crawler, cosmos crawler… Something that sounds at least a bit cool and is not copyrighted by anyone else. I like Void Crawler, but it has been used before. This might not be a problem, but finding a unique and cool name is even better.

Ahhh I’m stoked!! That sounds awesome! If I can throw in some space crawler name ideas, celestial crawlers, solar crawlers.

OOh! I do like celestial crawlers, particularly for any ships with a religious founding.

While Playing Through The Royalist Path As An Etherneer Romancing Sera I Noticed That In the Path That Raith Survives, Despite Never Having interacted with him and Not Having started Raith Romance At all The Game Still Treats Me As If I did It In that Route, Does this Mean That There Are Branches That Have Yet to be Added?

And Also After The End of the Royalist path…Will there Be A Choice to Have a Crashout And Go Into a Killing Rampage After Those who Attacked Us?, That’s Something That One of My Mc’s Would Do Considering That She turned into ash And He Doesn’t know That She is Still Alive, I Know That She is Still Alive Due To reading The Code And Can’t wait To See What She will Become Since There Are Severs Different Branches to that, I really Liked Her Character And Paths and Can’t Wait to See the Next Updates.

Oh, And Also Two More Things On The Sera Date Choice In the Protector Route, Coireal Acts As if I Accepted Her Offer of Love When I chose to Spend time with Sera Alone Despite Having rejected her offer Due to Choosing to Only date Sera, On Sera’s Date I Noticed that It Looked Like I Didn’t Chose to Romance Her Before Reaching there Despite Having Chose The Option To Romance Her When it First Came out.

Hi Haxs, Thanks for playing my game. Your messages have been very helpful.

How could I have you abandon poor Sera!!! It shall be sorted!

You found a bug with the Raith switch! I have looked through the code and found the cause. Your etherneer accused Revira of plotting, with good evidence, which resulted in a Raith path switch. This subpath and path-switch have been removed. I have amended it in the code.

I have also slightly changed Coireal’s wording. If she lives, she always expects to be chosen, no matter what you say. She is, after all, a Siren. Your act of love provides healing, and she will always be distraught and feel betrayed if you do not choose her. She made her offer to you, and it stays open until the very last moment.

With the Sera scene, I wanted it to come across as something special and meaningful. The night is not a desperate snuggle, unlike earlier, but rather a declaration of love. She wants it to be this, not just a fling. Again, I have slightly changed the wording to reflect this.

The Raith fix will be uploaded presently; the reworded sections will be up when I release the next update.

This was a great help!

As for crashing out and slaughtering all those conniving folks… This feeling is well deserved, after all we have been through. I will just say that Book 2 is where we put the world to rights in a variety of ways. Book 1 ends in rather desperate straits…

I have not updated the wording on the current player build, just my test build (for various testing and development reasons).

But I have updated the ‘Raith fix’ – a big, important find here!. Another thanks for that; a really good discrepancy was found, which was a bug! An evil bug!

Goodnight, mate.

Holy shit, 2 million words (thousands for codes) all for this. Will wait for release like I did with Lords of Infinity.

Lots of paths and choices. It is, sort of, an ‘origins’ simulator for the type of hero/anti-hero/evil lich we will become in Book 2. Although, as Book 1 of 2, we have the same start and very similar endpoints, the journey between varies dramatically depending on our choices.

I’m approaching the end of Book 1. The other day, I had the feeling, for the first time, of walking down a slope, lol. 2-3 ‘writing’ months are needed to complete the story before I have a final readthrough and add achievements and a checkpoint save system.
