A Mage Reborn, Book Two (WIP) - UPDATED August 7th | Book One Released!

They are already legitimately making money by selling the magic items they create.

The best magic items on the market, in fact.

STRONG AGREE not that i necessarily dislike the characterization of the mage after the events and the range of emotional responses you’re allowed to have makes this section super engaging and replayable but damn i’m always floored by how functional mc is when they first get to arcadia. no words of comfort, no support, they just get revived and its straight back to work like nobody is even sorry for them. it’s brutal out here!

i just think they should at least get to be a bit of a tire fire after all that. as a treat!

I just try to imagine MC is compartmentalizing everything. They’re functioning because they’re actively avoiding thinking/dealing with the fact they were burned alive by the people they saved. For my mage, it spills out through extreme cynicism and pessimism.

oh i completely agree with this read! i think compartmentalizing all their feelings into oblivion is 1000% what has carried the mage this far. but with them stacking as many L’s as they have, i’m hoping for the catharsis of like a proper biblical meltdown at some point. would love to get a little unhinged in the coming chapters!

until the king returns the inmates are running the asylum, which is kinda fun! while we wait, though, i have a question that spins in the back of my brain nonstop: do you guys think mireil ever really loved the mage?

my instinct is yes(??), but being loved by mireil is just not necessarily an enjoyable experience. would love your thoughts!

I would argue that she both deeply hated/resented the mage and also deeply loved them. They loved them because they provided the only real human companionship throughout their abuse and the fact she is shown willing to burden more of the pain to relieve some from the mage also shows that she did in fact care for them. However the poison of being told constantly and inherently knowing that she’ll never have the innate potential of the mage also drove her to resent them.

I think that in the start it was pretty much only love, and then as she grew it got twisted up. The more she compared herself to the Mage, the more she grew to resent them, and at that point it sort of… Poisoned the way she saw them to the point that she didn’t really care in a way that could be called genuine love. Maybe more obsessiveness or a desire to control them?

I think that towards the end of her life, it was also very difficult for her to comprehend that the Mage might never have hated her or considered themself superior to her at all. I think one of her biggest problems might actually have been that she doesn’t think the Mage ever really loved her, or maybe that them doing so would just have been another sign of the ways they were less ready to sacrifice for their Arcana than she was.

So I definitely think she loved the Mage at some point, but I’m not sure she did so in the end.

My mage would be down for this. But she’s totally falling for F… possibly the F/Y poly.

This is where my mage gets off your train. She is no longer loyal to them. They got their rocks off on watching her burn to death. The man she loved turned on her. Fuck them all. Leon is a dead man walking. Ante is dead, too. The rest of Param can live as long as they stay out of her way and leave her people (now Arcadians) alone. But if things go to hell for them, they better not look for her to save them. Let them live with their choices. Or die with them. It doesn’t really matter to her anymore.

The only ones she’d actually help are Aunt Bess (who she loves), Ilya, and Saine.

I want that unhinged thing to come out when my mage encounters Ante and Leon again. When she’s finished, there’d only be specks of dust floating in the air. Then, I can see her calmly turning to F and asking if he wants to go get hammered.

It seems to me that Saine doesn’t care for Leon anymore and probably wouldn’t care if he was killed either. The reason why he took the ambassadorship was that he could stay away from Leon at all times and I think it’s been mentioned that whenever Ilya is near Leon, she kind of acts cold towards him

Nope I don’t think they’d be ok with that but the thing is my mage will not let anything get in the way of his revenge so I guess his relationship with Ilya and Saine end when he got burned on a pyre

I know

I’m pretty sure that Saine doesn’t hate Leon as much as most people think since I’m like 80% sure that he is working as a spy for him

I don’t really care either way, nor does my MC. The way my mage looks at it, as long as they (Ilya and Saine) don’t get in her way when she goes after Leon and Ante, there won’t be trouble. If it’s at all possible, she’ll do it without them being the wiser until the deed is done. If they get pissed off, so be it. But she wouldn’t be apologetic at all…

“If you think being burned alive by the man you were in love with is something you can forgive and forget, then you need your head examined. Now get the fuck out of my way.”

Leon and Ante wanted to make the mage a villain. Well, what they made was a lifelong enemy. And their days are numbered, if my mage has a choice.

Before I respond, please try to combine posts instead of posting two things directly in a row without anyone else responding in the middle. If you wish to get someone’s attention, you can @ their ID.

What I said was that my MC would prefer Saine and Ilya to know nothing until she has already brought justice to Leon and Ante, who outright murdered her when she had bled for Param and its people OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

Look, if you want to see Leon as some great hero, who was perfectly in the right to burn their friend or lover alive–which is a horrible way to die, by the way–then that’s great for you. That’s part of the fun in analyzing media. Different people see it different ways.

In the story I read, from my own POV, I saw a mage who did the right thing time and again, who sacrificed and bled for Param, who was loyal to Leon and her friends, and what did she get for everything she did? Did she get the benefit of the doubt? Nope. Did Leon try to find out what was going on other than going into a cell and yelling at the mage? Nope.

Instead, he said fuck it. He didn’t kill the mage in a quick and painless (or mostly painless) manner, he killed her in the most painful way he could find and he did so without any remorse until the mage was already dead and the truth came out (and I felt no sympathy for him then, either). That was murder, outright murder and Leon–again, in my opinion–should pay for it. As should Ante, who egged him on and tried to turn him against the mage from the very beginning because she’s an evil sack of shit.

So, bottom line, this is between the mage and Leon. Saine and Ilya were caught in the middle before, when Leon murdered the mage. My mage doesn’t want to put them in the middle–it’s not their fight and she already knows they won’t want her to do what she plans to do. They may forgive her, they may not. Either way, she’ll be fine with it because there must be retribution for Leon’s actions, and she intends to see it done.

Edited to add:

I don’t expect them not to care. Neither does my MC. But how they feel about the matter doesn’t matter in the slightest to me or to my MC. That’s their problem. If they can’t understand why my MC wants Leon dead, that’s their problem.

This is what I was talking about above. There’s no need to post a separate post with a bunch of carets. You can either @ the person you’re talking to or you can quote them, then have your say. The posts with all the carets are basically spam. Please stop.

I’d say that Mireil really did love the Mage. It may have been buried under a ton of other complex feelings and her inferiority complex, but Mireil is shown to care. She didn’t have to put in any effort if her plan to mind control the Mage was truly endgame.

And as for whether Saine and Ilya being on our side or not, I have the feeling that they might not care at first, but when the ball gets rolling and people they are personally close with, they’ll eventually object. It also depends on what the Mage’s circumstances are. A willing Mage who is either consumed by revenge or indifferent to Arcadia’s plan would probably upset Saine and Ilya. But a Mage who is being strong armed into the plan would definitely have their sympathy.

That Saine and Leon are currently not on speaking terms in no way implies that lil bro will be ok if the mage breaks throught a window and shoots a fireball in the face of golden boy. I believe it is certain that if the identity of the Mage was revealed Saine would perfectly understand the fury and resentment they would feel agaisnt Param, but even still, from that and not caring about some nutjob wizard murdering your family there is a pretty long jump.

Equally so, Illya being ok with the player character taking revenge on the kingdom is absolutely impossible as I see it. Like, man, I would even see her positioning herself against the Mage even earlier than Saine just for the sake of saving the innocent lives you may potentially take in your quest for revenge. You all seem the forget that, wrong or not, we are talking here about war veterans with a very strong sense of morals and ideals, peopled used and willing to make hard decisions.
