A Herald of Verenai (WIP) | 35k Words | Demo Available

A HERALD OF VERENAI

You are a former slave, newly returned from the endless sea of oil and souls called Abzuf. A forgotten goddess has taken your soul and sent you back to the living with a task: restore her faith and earn back what she took.

Verenai was once a goddess of love, sex, and war. Now she is imprisoned, erased from the world, and hungry for worship. Her enemies still rule among the gods. To reclaim your soul, you’ll have to perform miracles, gather followers, and decide what kind of herald you’re willing to become.

  • Escape the island estate where you were enslaved and face the consequences of your return.
  • Build your strength, reputation, and connection to Verenai as you pursue her impossible mission.
  • Choose your gender, appearance, personality, and approach to the people you meet.
  • Decide whether to follow Verenai’s commands, challenge her, or find a way to serve on your own terms.
  • Meet four potential romance interests as your journey carries you toward the sprawling city of Gararalisto.
  • Navigate a world of forgotten gods, dangerous magic, political power, and mortals caught in between.

Current demo: The prologue and Chapter 1, approximately 35,000 words total.

Setting Synopsis

A dark fantasy world shaped by old gods, competing faiths, and empires. Your story begins on Codurum, an island of vast estates and enslaved laborers. After your return from Abzuf, your path leads toward Gararalisto—a sprawling city of wealth, poverty, magic, organized vice, and the approaching Festival of Eternal Night.

Content Warnings

This story contains mature and dark themes, including enslavement, abuse, violence, suicide, and sexual content. Please take care while reading.

Difficulty

The game focuses on narrative choices, character relationships, and roleplaying. You can shape your personality and approach; the story is not built around a single “correct” way to play.

Gender and Character Creation

Customize your character’s gender, appearance, sexuality, and personality. Your choices shape how you see the world and how others respond to you.

Romance

There are four potential romance interests. Verenai, the goddess who sends you back, is not a formal romance option.

Major Characters and Romance Interests

  • Amzelenn T’unkaahl— A half-elf deserter with a complicated history, a sharp tongue, and little patience for the gods.
  • Simaya Ka’thyphor— A dark elf caught in Gararalisto by a debt she cannot easily escape.
  • Finnian “Finn” Coulway— An exiled noble, mage, and scholar who wants magic to be accessible beyond the powerful.
  • Evelise “Evy” Rothsbrand— A tightly wound noblewoman determined to change the court politics she despises.

The wip certainly has much potential. will we be able to get back our soul while being defiant to the goddess?

Thank you! Yes, there is room to be defiant toward Verenai, but that doesn’t mean the Herald can disregard the terms of their arrangement without consequences. The player can question her, resist her, and try to use their position on their own terms, but remaining completely uncooperative while continuing to draw on her power can affect how she responds to them and what outcomes remain available.

Getting the Herald’s soul back is one possible ending, but it isn’t guaranteed on every path. There are also other ways their story can ultimately resolve depending on the choices they make.

This WIP’s prologue is pretty good. Chapter 1 has a satisfying conclusion and seems to be building up towards Chapter 2
